Thrifted and Gifted: Funky Chunkyy

This month in TNE magazine, we are focused on resetting the goals in our lives that we may have lost track of since the new year. Who better to have as our guest than the queen of resetting style and beauty - Astra Funky Chunky Marie, the creator of the vlog #thriftedandgifted. When we first met Astra Marie, it was outside of the TNE studio in Pasadena, on the corner of Arroyo and Colorado. She was wearing purple pants, a black button up top, a purple windbreaker jacket, a yellow beanie, and a cute little purse/backpack combo that she was wearing while also carrying a handheld purse. It was such a cute, eclectic style that was refreshing for to see, and especially since the clothes looked upcycled. Although it looked like she stepped out of a thrift shop, she was looked flashy and she owned her style! Knowing that she had the gift to thrift, she lived up to the expectations I had for her. If you aren’t familiar with Astra, she is a Long Beach native whose style has brought her to this creative hashtag! During our podcast, Astra shared the best places to obtain thrifted clothing and accessories, along with her easy hair tips to change her hairstyle to fit her mood while rarely exceeding $40. Astra shares her beauty journey, along with the do's and don'ts of fashion that she admits to even being guilty of! And during our interview, here’s what Beauty Babes Unite found out about Astra Marie, aka Funky Chunkyy.

1. Astra started thrifting by following her Dad’s footsteps. Leave it to Dad to shop on a budget and just get the job done, right?

2. She is not impressed by designer labels or brand names. She simply looks for styles of clothing that she likes for really low prices that fit well on her curvy body.

3. With that being said, she skips shopping at mass retailer stores such as Express, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and G by Guess. Astra thinks, why spend $30 on something that you can potentially find for $5 at a thrift shop?

4. Her hair changes as much as her outfits do. Wigs are just another fashion accessory to complete her look!

5. Astra may be into fashion, but she’s not very into makeup. She goes for the more natural look, which I can dig.

6. She does take a few minutes to apply false lashes, though. And if you need to know if she splurges on those, the answer is no. She buys the $2 lashes that you can find at any beauty supply shop.

7. Just because she’s not that into makeup doesn’t mean she isn’t into skincare. She treats her face to some homemade masks every now and then. Maybe Beauty Babes Unite will have to try them out for you!

8. For now, Astra styles herself, but in the future she would like to start offering styling as a service. Not only have her friends told her she needs to do this, but she feels like she’s ready to capitalize on her passion for thrifty fashion.

9. All of her outfits are tailored by a professional. In the future she’d like to learn the skill of tailoring, but for now she relies on a trustworthy seamstress that she’s been going to for years.

10. Although she didn’t start the hashtag #ThriftedAndGifted, she might as well have. With 560 public posts linked to the Instagram hashtag, Astra’s dominates it. You can also see her on YouTube at her channel “Thrifted and Gifted with Funky Chunkyy.”
