Southern California native K. Russell background in audio engineering for music gives us an eclectic review of today’s music so we can know what albums and songs are worth adding to our summer playlist.
Yuna- Chapters 6/10
The Malaysian singer kills this album, tracks like ͞"Crush͟" ft. Usher makes you feel like you can love someone like the movies giving you hope for love in this world. Her last LP back in 2013 Nocturnal was more of an eclectic mix of indie pop and folk. I like how on this album she gives us more of that 90’s Sade/ Brandy feel that we all miss jamming out to.
I'd like to hear a little more features. In my opinion a feature on the album can either make it or break it. She did great with the Usher feature, as well as the Jhene Aiko feature ͞"Used to Love You͟", if she just had one more the album could have been a bigger hit. Here's to the next one! Listen to: "Crush" ft. Usher and "Places To Go" both songs are sonically stupendous.
Anderson. Paak 7.5/10
The soulful raspiness of Anderson Paak creates a old school feel with modern instrumentals. Anderson. Paak formerly known as breezy love-joy, has progressed a lot over the years. I love his unique sound and this album is a vibe album. Perfect "clean your house" album.
LISTEN TO: The bird and the season/ carry me, both capture his soulful roots but bring some awesome uptempo beats.
Rebelution- Falling into Place 6.5/10
If you aren't familiar with the upbeat, California Reggae group. They make summer anthems, point, Blank, Period. The past albums like "courage to grow" and "peace of mind" make you feel like you're at the beach even if you're in the middle of Las Vegas in the summer time, and this album is no different. If you where looking for a chill "vibe" give this a listen immediately. The band is lead by Persian singer, Eric Rachmany, who is very open about the legalization of marijuana and is a big advocate for the pot community as well. This album will always put you in a good mood.
LISTEN TO: "free your mind" and "high on life", are both great summer anthems. I love the sounds of "high on life" you hear a "wow" under the drums and strings and just sets the mood of sunsets and bonfires.
Vic Mensa - There's a Lot Going On 8/10
This is how you do a smaller album! Vic doesn't hold back on every song! From 16 shots, a song about police brutality. To danger, with one of the best chorus' of the year. Vic and uzi where both featured on XXL's freshman list and compare the two for yourself. Vic clearly had the superior album.
LISTEN TO: "Danger" and "Dynasty", "Danger" has a great chorus and just hits harder than bae when she's hungry. "Dynasty" starts the album off right and gets you prepared to hear Vic's struggle.
