So you think you can sing!

“Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do,” we all know we’ve heard this singing exercise before someone’s preparing to perform. I will admit that is the first thing that came to mind when I knew I was about to interview Lyndia Johnson, the vocal coach extraordinaire. When she walked into the headquarters of TNE Magazine, our spirits connected instantly. I’m getting goosebumps just writing about our interaction. I was not expecting this interview to be filled with so much valuable information that it had to be split into two parts on the Exum Music Podcast.

Lyndia--I am at liberty to say Mz Lyndia-- is a powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with. A phenomenal woman of her craft inside and out would be an understatement. We immediately jumped into our interview on how she became so interested in voice. The history of her journey is one to check out on the podcast. Mz Lyndia really amazed me about how she started out her journey as an opera singer.

She discussed the trials and tribulations which shaped the person and coach that she is today. The trials she has been through flourished into her overall purpose, which is her business of Sterling Voice Coaching, Ltd. How she came up with the name for her business almost brought tears to my eyes. I felt like I was talking to a family member in this interview.

There was a great amount of knowledge of the vocal chords one has and how to the maintaining of our voice. Without a doubt, you will learn something from Mz Lyndia. Even during our conversation, she spoke with grace and sound; I knew she practiced what she preached. From ways to protect your vocal chords to myths of the singing world, I was just amazed.

Her journey on wanting to help develop voices in the music industry was just mind-blowing. It was not easy for her to get to where she is right now in her vocal journey. She goes into the high and the lows of teaching voice and also how she kept receiving messages in her spirit that she needs to continue doing what she loves to do. The path that she took and endured will inspire anyone who wants to achieve what their heart desires.

During our interview what really fascinated me about Mz Lyndia is that she is a passionate coach that works closely with speech and voice pathologists to help singers recover from vocal polyps/nodules. You will get that definition as well as many more of the instrument associated with the voice in the podcast. She is well respected in the industry. Mz Lyndia served on the Board of Directors for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for over eight years. She also has been the direct vocal consultant for Grammy Educational Programs including “Grammy in the Schools” and implemented the vocal curriculum for “Grammy Camp.” Her relationship with the Recording Academy has been a long recognized and well-respected collaboration.

This interview was so informational and inspiring that you will want more than two parts. Make sure to tune into Exum Music to get the full enjoyment of this phenomenal woman whose voice will be heard for years to come through her programs and coaching in the music industry.
