Girls Trip Movie Review

Girls Trip follows the long-needed reunion of college besties the flossy posse consisting of the gorgeous Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah, and Tiffany Haddish. The group who met in college and were close like family until five years before the film starts and an opportunity arises for the group to reassemble for an epic Girls trip during the Essence festival in New Orleans. The story centers around Ryan(Hall) who is our narrator and the friend that seems to have it all. She walks us through the journey of her friends who seem to all go their own ways due to the growing apart phase we all fear entering "real adulthood." Missing her friends, she organizes to bring everyone together since she will be the keynote speaker at the essence festival. The film follows the ladies on a hilarious journey to rediscovering what made them so close in the 1st place. The film will have you laughing u controllably from start to finish as the ladies let loose in the party filled streets of New Orleans. There are several great comedic cameos by the likes of Mike Colter who plays Ryan's hunky, well dressed and well spoken but "plastic" husband, Kofi Siriboe who plays the young hot thing determined to get Lisa's (Pinkett-Smith) groove back, Larenz Tate the old friend/one that got away and Deborah Ayorinde the thot that just won't step off. The movie takes the girls on an apologetic thrill ride of drinking, parties, and debauchery that rivals the hangover movies. It also has great moments of heart and self-reflection and exploration that will give you the feels and make you cheer in between laughs. It feels so close to home and celebrates the main theme of true friendships never die. Afterward, you will probably call up your favorite people just to tell them how much you love them. The film earns its hard R rating but in a fun way perfect for all adults. Definitely, do not bring your kids but instead your aces and find a good theatre where drinks are welcome. Tiffany Haddish is definitely one to watch as she steals every scene in which she is part of her street savvy and explosive character Dina brings the most laughs with her sometimes crass but always from the heart comedic energy that leaps off the page and onto the screen seemingly effortlessly. She is the character you will definitely never forget with her magnetic energy and daring personality. The one that will always be there for her girls whether it's pouring you that extra strong drink, giving you that finger snapping brutal honesty, or breaking a bottle over the counter to cut an SOB. The women's chemistry onscreen is palpable. You would swear that all these women really did know each other all their lives. All the relationships and their inner workings come off so authentic and flow seamlessly. I also loved the aloof over the top always doing too much white woman agent role played by Kate Walsh. Her dynamic added to the solid group of black female leads added another awesome flavor. Latifah as a bit more of the straight character who also has a lot on her plate and her dilemma with loyalty to her friend that she doesn't necessarily feel is fully returned added a great layer to the honesty of the more serious parts of the film as well. Also the hilariousness exploration of Lisa(Pinkett-Smith) whose path to motherhood has turned her into a kind of old spinster back into a sexually liberated woman. All in all the movie is an absolute 10 out of 10. A movie steeped in fun and nostalgia and an outright tribute to true friendship and a celebration of women of color. They can bring the funny just like any man. They can have fun and be wild without being seen as something less in their strong womanhood. An absolute masterpiece of a must-see summer movie.
